Indian institutions of repute in economics

After all my search for the best schools to apply in India for economics, i have found the following institutions. I have chosen these, taking in account their international repute, number of students who have gone to top universities in the world for further studies and their number of quantitative electives which would help in further studies in economics. They are
1) Indian Statistical Institute(ISI)
2) Delhi School of Economics(DSE)
3) Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU)
4) Indira Gandhi Institute for Development and Research(IGIDR)
All the above institutions offer a masters programme in economics which includes quantitative papers as compulsory and optional papers. So for those who are planning to do economics at an academic level, these would be the best options. The admission is through an entrance test comprising of both economics and math at the undergraduate level.
For those who wish to pusue a doctorate in economics, these institutions will get you on the right track. The entrance questions can get real tricky if you dont have your basics right. So start working on your basics from now. All the best!

Are there any books or previous year questions available to write those exams.

Btw How do you rate MA in economics from Madras university.

Alex said...

Well anonymous,
Yes there are previous question papers of the entrances of JNU and DSE and sample question papers of IGIDR.
You can do an MA from anywherein India but i feel the top 4 are the ones mentioned in my thread.
I would not prefer doing an MA from Madras niversity.

Alex said...

You can buy it from the University of Delhi directly, they will not send it by post .

Is it sufficient to prepare with these questions papers? if not on what other topics i should concentrate.

Alex said...

Yes the topics covered in the previous question papers are more than enough and by the way, where did you do your undergrad?

Hey alex I have done my BSc in STatistics from Lady Shri Ram College. Was considering DSE. HAve passed out 2 yrs back....what are the papers like?? Can someone with no eco background crack it?

Alex said...

Dear Aditi,
What did you do for the past two years have you been in touch with stats and math? Well if you have been in touch, you can certainly consider DSE, as they have an option B for students who have taken up either math or stats.
My view about option B would be , it is very mathematical. And you need to be really strong.
All the best

im rite now in 11th...im plannin to do b.a in eco further..but i donot have any idea what all i need to get admission in a gud institute....whether its a high percentage in 12th or a gettin thorugh an entrance test....and if there is an entrance test...then how should i prepare for it from the startin....

Alex said...

anon,

In most cases it is the high marks that will help you.

In institutes such as IIT Madras and University of Hyderabad (they offer Integrated MA programmes) you have to write an entrance test.

You can look up their websites to know what you have to be prepared for. (I think it is analytical reasoning, english, etc)
